Bengals' Marvin Lewis on potential QB competition: 'There's no time for that'

Despite continued struggles from starting quarterback Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis doesn't appear likely to entertain the idea of a competition under center any time soon.

Recently asked if the Bengals would look to bring in a quarterback to push Dalton heading into his fifth NFL season, Lewis was quick to dismiss the idea.

"There's no time for that," he said, according the Cincinnati Enquirer's Paul Dehner Jr. "We have no problem with Andy Dalton as our quarterback. We don't have time to waste time with another quarterback. The quarterback competition: Where has it worked? It doesn't get you wins."

While Lewis' reservations about a quarterback competition make sense for a number of reasons, Dalton putting together one of his worst statistical seasons - throwing for 3,398 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions - has to be concerning for the team.

The Bengals have yet to manage a playoff win in Lewis' 12 years at the helm, and failing to take the next step at some point in the near future could force management to make some fairly significant changes.

After making him one of the league's highest-paid players in August, the Bengals desperately need Dalton to improve and develop into the franchise-type quarterback they've long envisioned him becoming.
