2007 - Darrent Williams killed

Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams is killed in a drive-by shooting just after 2 a.m. on New Year's Day near downtown Denver. He was 24 years old.

The shooting was the result of a confrontation at a nightclub in which Williams was not involved. Teammate Brandon Marshall was reportedly with Williams and was involved in the dispute.

1961 - Oilers win first AFL championship

The Houston Oilers defeat the Los Angeles Chargers 24-16 to win the first AFL championship.

The following season, the Oilers once again defeat the Chargers - now playing out of San Diego - to repeat as champions.

1902 - First Rose Bowl played

The first Tournament of Roses (later renamed the Rose Bowl) game is played in Pasadena, CA. when Michigan defeats Stanford 49-0.

1933 - First Orange Bowl played

Miami defeats Manhattan 7-0 in the first Orange Bowl.

1935 - First Sugar Bowl played

Tulane defeats Temple 20-14 in the first Sugar Bowl.
