San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews failed to practice again Thursday due to an ankle injury.
Mathews reportedly wasn't close to playing last Sunday and appears doubtful to play Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers. U-T San Diego's Michael Gehlken speculates Mathews could be shut down for the season.
If Mathews is unable to play this weekend, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown are expected to split carries.
