Browns' Manziel: 'I need to play my role of the backup and that's that'
Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer's putrid game against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week doesn't have backup Johnny Manziel ready to ditch his clipboard in favor of a starting gig.
"I'm still just playing my role what these coaches have for me, so I don't think it's any eagerness or urgency or anything,'' Manziel told the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot. "If the time down the road comes where it's my time to get in the game plan, then when that chance is, I think I need to capitalize on those moments.''
Hoyer completed 16-of-41 passes for 215 yards and an interception as the Browns were blown out 24-6 by the previously winless Jaguars. Despite their struggles, the Browns decided to ride it out with the veteran despite growing support from a fanbase hungry to see Johnny Football.
Manziel, for his part, is content with avoiding a quarterback controversy.
"I think there's been enough drama around me and my life for a couple of years now,'' he said. "So for me, I know whenever camp was over and we got into the roles of who was going to play what role, Brian was named the starter and I was named the backup and now I need to play my role of the backup and that's that.''
