Snyder cites 'historical truths' on why team keeps Redskins name
The debate over the Washington Redskins' name continues to rage on, with team owner, Daniel Snyder, continuing his crusade to keep the controversial moniker.
Snyder was interviewed by ESPN's John Barr on Tuesday, and used the flimsy "historical truths" excuse in order to justify the continuation of a name that most people think should have been jettisoned long ago.
“It’s what the name actually means,” Snyder said (via The Washington Post). “I would like people to know the history. Whether it’s Lone Star Dietz, whether it’s Walter ‘Blackie’ Wetzel in Montana, it’s just historical truths. And I’d like them to understand — as I think most do — that the name really means honor, respect.
"We sing 'Hail to the Redskins.' We don't say hurt anybody. We say 'Hail to the Redskins. Braves on the war path. Fight for old DC.' We only sing it when we score a touchdown.
"That's the problem because last season we didn't sing it quite enough as we would've liked to."
Barr then asked Snyder "What is a Redskin?"
"A Redskin is a football player. A Redskin is our fans. The Washington Redskins fan base represents honor, represents respect, represents pride. Hopefully winning" Snyder said. "And, and, it, it's a positive. Taken out of context ... you can take things out of context all over the place. But in this particular case, it is what it is. It's very obvious."
Snyder wasn't the only person backing the team's name on Tuesday, as former Washington placekicker Mark Moseley had some interesting opinions on the matter.
Per WJLA
I went up to an Indian and asked him to his face, someone I didn’t even know, and asked him if I called him a redskin, would he be offended, and he said ‘Absolutely not. I take great pride in that.’
...
If it was Indians, then I would be concerned. But everyone that’s said anything to me has been a white man or a black man. No red men have said anything derogatory to me about it.
...
The word redskins was a solidarity name that the Indians gave themselves back when they were negotiating with the white man.
