Colts' Mathis suspended 4 games for violating drug policy: Agent calls it 'unjust and unfair'

Michael Hickey-US PRESSWIRE

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis was suspended four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy Friday, a decision Mathis' agent says is not fair.

“The league and commissioner Goodell have taken a stance that puts Robert under some strict scrutiny,” agent Hadley Englehard said on "SportsCenter" via Pro Football Talk. “That is really unjust and unfair.”

Mathis issued a statement shortly after reports of the suspension emerged, claiming it was the result of his doctor prescribing medication for "fertility" issues, according to FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo.

Englehard elaborated upon Mathis' story, insisting last season's NFL sack leader took a fertility drug because he and his wife decided they wanted to give his mother another grandchild after learning Mathis' mother had cancer.

The agent said an exception should be made because Mathis took the medication for a medical reason.

“We have given [NFL commissioner Roger Goodell] all the medical data,” Englehard said. “We are just amazed that the commissioner and the NFL have put this kind of punishment on Robert.”
