New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the practice field Thursday after dislocating a toe on his right foot, the team announced.

Fields will be day-to-day following a medical evaluation but avoided serious injury and isn't expected to miss significant time.

He sustained the injury after a teammate stepped on his foot, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fields pulled up after attempting a short throw to tight end Jeremy Ruckert, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. He briefly sat on the ground after the incompletion and then limped to the injury tent with the assistance of a team trainer. A cart took the Jets passer to the locker room, where he was seen walking into the team's facility for further evaluation.

Head coach Aaron Glenn stopped the team period of practice following Fields' injury and moved on to a special teams period, according to Cimini. Glenn expressed confidence in backup Tyrod Taylor if Fields were to be sidelined for an extended time.

"Tyrod's been in this league 14 years. With the leadership he brings, we're all good," Glenn said, per team reporter Randy Lange. "I think the most important part is that if anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop-off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play call."

Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook are other options on New York's QB depth chart.

Fields is projected to be the Jets' starting quarterback after signing a two-year, $40-million contract in March. He spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
