Jags' Coen: Hunter won't practice with both units on same day in OTAs

The Jacksonville Jaguars aren't planning on having rookie Travis Hunter practice with the offense and defense on the same day during organized team activities.

"We won't put him in that situation to have him do that, although I'm sure he'd probably want to," Jacksonville head coach Liam Coen said, according to team reporter John Oehser.

The Jaguars sent a package of draft picks that included their 2026 first-round choice to Cleveland to move up to No. 2 and get Hunter. The former Colorado star played both sides of the ball in college and is expected to do the same in the NFL.

Though he won't practice with both units on the same day, Hunter will be in offensive and defensive meetings.

"He still meets defensively every day that he's on offense, so he's getting the mental part of it and is able to catch up on some of the communication, some of the corrections off the film from the defensive side of the ball," Coen added. "He's getting a lot of the mental and it would probably be unfair to put him out on the grass and do both and ask him to go do that and see success."

Coen noted the Jags are still in the "initial stages" of ramping up Hunter and eventually he will be practicing with both sides.

"In season, he's going to probably have to, just because it's the way practices are kind of organized," the head coach explained. "He's definitely going to have to do that. I envision maybe a third-down day in season where he's playing receiver, but he's also going to have to go get some reps on defense and be able to do some of those things. It will come up, absolutely."

Hunter, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2024, caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns in his final year at Colorado. He also recorded four interceptions.
