Tiki Barber says he knows how to fix fumble-prone David Wilson
Former New York Giants Pro Bowl running back Tiki Barber believes he can fix current Giants tailback David Wilson's fumble woes.
"The key is awareness of when contact is coming," Barber said. "If you watch David's fumbles, he's not aware of contact. He thinks he can just go through and by the time contact comes, the ball is already compromised."
Barber had a combined 35 fumbles from 2000-03, an average of nine per season. He improved those numbers over the course of his final three seasons after making technical adjustments, fumbling only nine times.
"I'd run through the contact in a compact way," Barber said. "It allowed me to run through tackles better. My feet were close together, and I was more balanced. The unintended consequence of carrying the ball like that is that I became a more powerful runner."
Wilson is taking Barber's advice to heart, and trying out his techniques.
"It makes sense. It felt good in practice, so I plan on using it," Wilson said.
Wilson fumbled twice in the Giants' season opener, but has only miscued three times in 17 career games.
