The Miami Dolphins are expected to start quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick against the New York Jets after downgrading Tua Tagovailoa from questionable to doubtful due to a thumb injury, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

The Dolphins seemingly confirmed their first-round pick would miss the AFC East showdown by elevating quarterback Reid Sinnett to the active roster.

Tagovailoa suffered the left thumb injury Wednesday after hitting it against a helmet during practice.

The Dolphins benched the rookie signal-caller in the fourth quarter of last week's loss to the Denver Broncos due to poor play. Head coach Brian Flores later emphasized that Tagovailoa would remain the starter over Fitzpatrick.

The former Alabama star has completed 61% of his passes for 593 yards and six touchdowns in four starts. He owns a 3-1 record.

Fitzpatrick led the Dolphins to a 3-3 start but was replaced by Tagovailoa during the team's bye week.

The veteran will be tasked with keeping Miami in the playoff hunt against one of his former teams. Fitzpatrick started 27 games for New York during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
