Mickelson, Barkley dominate Manning, Curry for The Match III victory

Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley completed the upset over Peyton Manning and Stephen Curry in dominant fashion by winning "The Match: Champions for Change" 4-and-3 in a showdown that ended on the 15th hole.

The betting underdogs lost the first hole of The Match III - which raised nearly $5.5 million for the advancement of Historically Black Colleges and Universities - but rattled off four consecutive wins to quickly flip the script.

Mickelson - the lone professional golfer in the group - carried the team for much of the day, hitting plenty of bombs and acting as a coach for his partner, but Barkley held his own in the team competition. Chuck turned heads early by hitting the first two fairways of the round. He also showed no signs of the infamous swing people think of when they hear Barkley and the game of golf.

Manning and Curry failed to muster any form of a comeback once their lead slipped away. Curry - who was by far the second-best player in the foursome - played well but neither he nor Manning could find their rhythm or sink any clutch putts. They did not make a single birdie while playing modified alternate shot, resulting in a crushing defeat at the hands of a 44-time PGA Tour winner and a 25-handicapper.

The Match III from Stone Canyon Golf Club, a venue in Arizona that Mickelson owns, also helped donate millions of meals through Feeding America to help families in need during the holiday season.

This was the third edition of the made-for-TV event. Mickelson now has two wins, with his only loss coming in May when Tiger Woods partnered with Manning to help raise money for COVID-19 relief efforts.
