The Chicago Bears have informed impending free-agent quarterback Brian Hoyer that they're interested in re-signing him, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports.

Hoyer started five games for the Bears last season, putting up career numbers.

While the 31-year-old is nothing more than a stop-gap starter or top backup at this stage of his career, the Bears' interest in him makes sense. Longtime quarterback Jay Cutler is expected to be released, meaning Chicago needs to find a starter in free agency or the draft.

The Bears are reportedly interested in Mike Glennon, though it could cost them between $14-$15 million to capture his services. They also hold the third overall pick in this year's draft, but there are doubts about whether there's a quarterback worthy of being drafted at that spot.

Hoyer will likely be an affordable option that could see the Bears through the 2017 season or start until a rookie is ready to take the reins.
