49ers interview both Seahawks co-directors of personnel for GM job
The San Francisco 49ers interviewed both of the Seattle Seahawks' co-directors of player personnel - Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer - on Monday for their vacant general manager position.
Fitterer began his NFL career as a scout with the New York Giants after a three-year stint as a minor-league baseball player. He joined the Seahawks in 2005 as director of college scouting and played a key part in drafting Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor.
Kirchner has worked in the league for 17 years between the Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. He had a hand in drafting stars such as Thomas Davis and Julius Peppers, as well as Wilson, Wagner, and Sherman.
With Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan reportedly becoming the favorite for San Francisco's head coaching position, the team is "honing in" on hiring its general manager, a source told Sporting News' Alex Marvez.
According to MMQB's Albert Breer, the 49ers' interview process is being conducted by CEO Jed York, VP of football operations Paraag Marathe, and director of football administration and analytics Brian Hampton.
Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable is reportedly the 49ers' other option for head coach. The 49ers have expressed interest in hiring a GM-coach combo who have experience working with one another, making Cable's hiring more likely if Kirchner or Fitterer get the job.
