Steelers' Heyward-Bey credits mother for saving his millions
Football has made Darrius Heyward-Bey a millionaire. His mom has ensured he remains one.
The Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver has made an estimated $35 million in his eight seasons in the NFL. Thanks to his mother, Vivian, he still owns much of that total. His mother is a certified accountant and takes care of his portfolio.
"I get an email every Tuesday. I can read it over, check it up, I see where the money is going," Heyward-Bey told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler of his working relationship with his mother.
The 29-year-old said he works on a monthly allowance and doesn't spend much of the funds he allots himself. He goes as far as turning off the cable during the season when he's not home.
"I don't have any kid and I'm not married, so the money I spend is on me. It's really easy to say no to myself," he explained. "I keep things real simple. I'm not really a flashy guy. I understand what I want to buy. I invest my money well and pay my taxes."
Heyward-Bey signed a three-year, $3.8-million contract with the Steelers this offseason, further contributing to his funds.
