Report: Redskins cut Paulsen, Jenkins, Ioannidis
The Washington Redskins released defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins, tight end Logan Paulsen, and fifth-round rookie Matt Ioannidis in advance of Saturday's deadline to finalize their 53-man roster, Mike Jones of The Washington Post reports.
Jenkins played in just one preseason game after landing a 1-year contract with Washington last week.
His addition seemed a sensible move in addressing a clear position of need on the defensive front, but the Redskins appear pleased with the rest of the group at that spot. Jenkins, 35, is coming off a three-year stint with the New York Giants, in which he started 40 of 44 appearances.
Paulsen joined the club as an undrafted free agent in 2010, so his time with the Redskins ends after seven seasons. The blocking specialist started 42 games before missing all of the 2015 campaign with an injury, and Vernon Davis' addition alongside starting tight end Jordan Reed made him expendable.
Parting ways with Ioannidis may be Washington's most surprising move of the day as it's rare for a team to give up on a mid-round pick before his rookie season gets underway. Though the defensive tackle is a practice squad candidate, it's also possible another team puts in a waiver claim to steal him away.
