Riyad Mahrez: Leicester City won't win the league

Riyad Mahrez has been in storming form this term, with his goals and assists helping fire Leicester City to the summit of the Premier League - but it won't last.

At least, that's the belief of the Algerian winger, who just has his eyes set on the club securing its Premier League status.

"I don't think we can win the league," Mahrez told BBC World Football. "We just need to get the 40 points and then after that we will see."

With 32 points already won after 15 games, and another 69 on offer for the remainder of the season, this looks like a very modest target for the Foxes.

This season, Mahrez and his colleague Jamie Vardy have 24 goals between them - more than 14 sides in the Premier League. It is quite the tally, but the former Le Havre man isn't particularly shocked by his own performance.

"I'm not surprised because I knew I could do the things that I have done," Mahrez continued. "Football is just confidence. When you start scoring and you carry on it gives you more confidence so maybe that has helped me."

The 24-year-old was linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium a year ago, with Marseille tipped as his potential suitor. This was shot down, however, after president Vincent Lebrune reportedly said he is "not a sucker" and suggested Leicester players don't have the quality required to line up at the Stade Velodrome.

Marseille currently sits a rather unremarkable ninth in Ligue 1 while Leicester sits atop English football, so Mahrez can easily shrug off those comments.

"He thinks what he thinks. I know what I am, I know what I'm doing in the football, I know what I can do," Mahrez said. "The people who don't know football - I don't want to speak about them.

"Everyone's not going to love you. Sometimes some people love you, some people hate you, some people don't like your football. That's life so I don't care, I don't mind."

Leicester welcomes Chelsea on Monday, with Claudio Ranieri's oufit looking to pour greater misery on the reigning Premier League champion.
