After winning her first Grand Slam singles title, Flavia Pennetta announced that Saturday's final would be her last match ever at the US Open.

Following her straight-sets victory over fellow Italian Roberta Vinci, the 33-year-old told Robin Roberts that she had "one more thing" to say to the crowd at Flushing Meadows.

"I don't know what I like to do, so I have to discover everything for me," Pennetta told reporters, explaining she made her decision to retire during last month's Rogers Cup in Toronto. She informed lifelong friend Vinci of the decision while sitting together before the interview.

Pennetta later told Eurosport that she plans to play out the rest of the 2015 season before entering retirement. The news reportedly came as a surprise to Pennetta's fiance, fellow tennis pro Fabio Fognini - who had a shocking win of his own earlier in the tournament, upsetting Rafael Nadal in the third round.

Pennetta also won a doubles crown at the 2009 Australian Open alongside Gisela Dulko of Argentina. Barring a continued run of high form for the rest of the year, Pennetta will retire with 10 career WTA singles titles, her first dating back to 2004.

Many members of the tennis community tweeted in support of Pennetta's win and decision to end her career.
