The New York Jets released quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson ahead of Saturday's 53-man roster deadline.
The moves leave the Jets with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, and rookie Bryce Petty as the only quarterbacks on the roster.
It's perhaps an encouraging sign that Smith may return from a broken jaw early in the season. The Jets likely don't want to force Petty into action before he's ready, and they apparently feel safe moving forward without additional veteran insurance behind Fitzpatrick.
