Jay Ajayi was considered by some to be a possible second-round selection, but watched in agony as he descended all the way to the fifth round, where he was chosen by the Miami Dolphins.
Ajayi ran for 1,823 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, while adding four receiving touchdowns in an excellent junior campaign at Boise State.
The 21-year-old expressed his displeasure about sliding to the third day of the draft Sunday.
"I did think I was going to go earlier, so I was definitely disappointed," Ajayi said to ESPN's James Walker. "At the same time, I can only control what I can control. I know right now, at this very moment, that I'm extremely healthy and ready to go to camp and ready to contribute right away.
"I am excited that the Dolphins took a chance on me. I'm ready to prove all the people wrong and prove the Dolphins right."
Ajayi will likely backup Lamar Miller and is focused on challenging for the team's starting running back position. Miami received excellent value by drafting a player of Ajayi's caliber late in the weekend, and it could prove to be one of the better selections of this year's draft.
