VIDEO: Texas A&M to use new mouthguard to reduce concussions
Texas A&M hopes to minimize the number of head injuries its football players sustain.
The Aggies are partnering with i1 Biometrics to create mouthguards that will deliver real-time data regarding a player's potential for head injury. It is expected that the data will help team officials decide whether a player needs to be removed from the game or not.
Aggies head athletic trainer David Weir spoke about the mouthguards, which are still in the trial stage during the team's spring practices and games, according to Tashara Parker of KAGS TV.
"This is an opportunity to look at the impacts and the effects of impacts measuring G forces," Weir said. "The particular mouthpiece has an accelerometer that's built into the mouthpiece which allows for that to be measured and then there's a transmitter out in front of the mouthpiece that's attached to it, that will actually transmit that data to a sideline computer."
