Top 4 matches from the 2014 Australian Open
With the 2015 Australian Open almost upon us, it's only fitting to look back on last year's memorable tournament.
Upsets ruled the day, while feel-good stories kept the tide rolling. Here we remember the best four matches from the 2014 Aussie Open.
Wawrinka upsets Djokovic in quarterfinal
An epic five-set battle ended with the lower seed coming out on top.
Swiss native Stanislas Wawrinka held his nerve through a near-comeback and temporary rain delay to defeat Novak Djokovic in a classic.
A year prior, Wawrinka had reached his first Grand Slam semifinal at the U.S. Open, where he was beaten by Djokovic.
This time around, though, he broke the Serbian to overcome the odds and reach the semifinal.
Wawrinka does it again vs. Nadal
Wawrinka did the unthinkable against Rafael Nadal.
He dominated Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3. Wawrinka did it in two hours and 21 minutes, and leapfrogged to No. 3 in the world from No. 8.
Cibulkova shocks Sharapova
No. 20 Dominika Cibulkova pulled off a miraculous victory over third-ranked Maria Sharapova in arguably the tournament's biggest upset.
In sweltering heat, Sharapova came out on top in the first set. But the underdog stormed back, taking the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Cibulkova made it all the way to the championship match, where she eventually lost to Li Na.
Ivanovic knocks off top-seeded Serena Williams
What a contest it was.
Aussie Open favorite Serena Williams cruised to a first-set victory. From there, No. 14 Ana Ivanovic came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Ironically, Ivanovic was upset in the quarterfinal by 30th-ranked Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.
