Report: UAB unlikely to receive bowl invitation despite being eligible
The news has gone from bad to worse for the UAB football program.
On Tuesday, school president Ray Watts announced that the Blazers' football program would be disbanded. Then, on Saturday, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported that it seems highly unlikely that UAB will receive a bowl invitation, despite being eligible at 6-6.
UAB can't receive one of the league's five bowl berths, as the Conference USA rules require its affiliated bowls to select the teams with the most victories. That means the spots will go to Marshall, Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky, Rice, and UTEP, who each have at least seven wins.
UAB would need to receive an invite from a bowl game not affiliated with C-USA, but McMurphy believes their chances of receiving an at-large bid are nonexistent given the state of the program and the other options available.
There are currently 79 bowl eligible teams for 76 bowl berths, and two teams, Oklahoma State and Temple, could gain eligibility with wins on Saturday.
