Malky Mackay hopes supporters will forgive past mistakes

Malky Mackay addressed the controversy surrounding his appointment as Wigan's manager Wednesday, saying he hopes the team's performances on the pitch can help mend any hard feelings towards the Scottish manager.

“It has been a difficult period in my career and I have made mistakes, but I hope that in my time at Wigan the people of Wigan will see who I am, and see that I’m someone who desperately wants the club to do well," Mackay said on the team's website.

Mackay had quite the controversial end to his career at Cardiff City after his tumultuous relationship with owner Vincent Tan led to his dismissal in December 2013. That incident was followed by the texting scandal in which Mackay was caught sending inappropriate texts that ultimately cost him a manager role with Cryistal Palace.

“For (Wigan owner Dave Whelan) to give me this opportunity I’ll make sure I do everything in my power in terms of my work ethic and my drive and determination to make sure that the Chairman and his club are back where they should be.”

The Football Association continues to investigate Mackay for the texts. There's a clause stating the club is free to terminate his Wigan contract if the FA finds him guilty.

There is currently no time frame for when the investigation will conclude and a punishment isn't clear if Mackay is found guilty.
