Experts question authenticity of Jameis Winston autographs
Two prominent autograph experts were unable to validate the authenticity of memorabilia allegedly signed by Florida State's Jameis Winston as part of an ESPN "Outside the Lines" investigation, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.
One expert said he wasn't comfortable validating the autographs' authenticity because of the lack of verified Winston autographs in the marketplace, while another expert said: "these Winston autographs from the supposed signing are done by more than one hand. His authentic signature is very unstructured, which makes it harder to authenticate, but there are many here that actually are structured very well."
Florida State previously said it has no information linking the quarterback to payments for autographs, and Winston has never been formally disciplined for anything related to autographs, nor has he commented on the matter.
The investigation also cites sources as saying that Florida memorabilia dealer Donnie Burkhalter told those who paid for the alleged signed memorabilia that he was able to secure Winston's autograph through a relationship he had with Devonta Freeman, the former FSU and current Atlanta Falcons running back.
From the report:
Freeman, through his agent Tony Fleming, acknowledged to "Outside the Lines" that the running back did a signing with Burkhalter after his eligibility expired and confirmed that Burkhalter wanted Freeman to approach Winston earlier in the year, which he did. But Fleming said that his client said Winston told him no, and that's where his involvement ended.
