California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday to apologize for his two-day crusade against Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist and horse racing's Triple Crown rules.

Coburn, who was joined on GMA's set by his wife Caroline, attempted to atone for remarks made following California Chrome's failed bid to become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years.

Following the race, the 61-year-old owner called the field "cheaters" colluding against his horse. He then compounded his comments by comparing it to him playing basketball against a child in a wheelchair.

"Very ashamed of myself," Coburn told GMA. "Very ashamed. I need to apologize to a lot of people."

At the center of Coburn's rant was what he felt was an unfair advantage against his horse, which finished fourth in Saturday's race. Tonalist, the winning horse, did not compete in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes.

"I need to apologize to the winners," Coburn said on Monday. "They run a beautiful race. They deserve that. I didn't mean to take anything away from them," Coburn said. "... Congratulations, you got a fantastic horse. He deserved to win. He won the race, fair and square."
