GIF: McDonagh's phantom hooking penalty sums up Rangers season so far
In the first period of Friday night's game between the Rangers and the Islanders in Manhattan, Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh appeared to cleanly lift Islanders winger Cal Clutterbuck's stick, disrupting a breakaway opportunity.
But the on-ice officials saw it differently. They penalized McDonagh for hooking, and awarded Clutterbuck a penalty shot. You can judge whether the referees got the call right, or not, for yourself:

As a result of McDonagh's "hook", Clutterbuck opened the scoring with a penalty shot goal:
The Rangers are currently dead last in the NHL in PDO, a stat which combines shooting percentage and save percentage at even-strength and is used as a shorthand way of measuring puck luck. While this play occurred with the Rangers on the man-advantage, this is precisely the type of awful bounce that seems to have consistently gone against New York all season long.
