Pacers' George Hill on Paul George: 'He's more of a 10-way player'
Indiana Pacers point guard George Hill is not the only one in awe of the hot start shooting guard Paul George has gotten off to. Almost every teammate was singing his praises in an interview with Slam Magazine's Tzvi Twersky.
While Hill watches and plays with George, he sees the potential in him and is enamored with his will to win. Rookie Solomon Hill mentions George isn't caught up in being offensively-minded, he blocks who they need him to when they need him to which helps the team the most. George Hill is in agreement.
"If he keeps improving like he’s been, he can be a Hall of Famer in this League. I don’t count him just as a two-way player; he’s more like a 10-way player. He can pass, he can shoot, he can dribble, he can defend, he can guard a big, he can guard a small." Quote via Slam
Pacers guard Donald Sloan also sees the potential for greatness in George and wasn't shy about gushing over him.
"I’m not surprised at all by Paul’s hot start. I watched him play last year, watched him develop. I could see it coming. He’s playing with a high level of confidence right now, and he definitely has the skill set and the right group around him."
The success Paul George is experiencing is not something that hasn't been meticulously honed through the years. He's not skating by on talent alone. George told Slam about his desire to be a great guard.
"I used to always tell myself that no matter what, I’m always going to be a guard. I looked up to big guards, Kobe [Bryant] and T-Mac. So ever since I was a kid, I would go to my garage and just dribble the ball around. I used to work on my handles so coach would keep me on the perimeter.”
Even with all the hard work put in, his mother admits she doubted George would ever make it to the NBA. "He’d tell me, ‘Mom, watch. I’m going to the NBA. He’d keep on saying it. In my mind, it was not something realistic. He had this passion and drive that he knew it, though.”
George hasn't reached the top of his potential yet, at least in his mind. He says he has a lot of work to do to get where he wants to be and that starts with consistency. For George, making the NBA and succeeding is just one step of many he hopes to make.
"I have goals. I want to be MVP. I want to be Defensive Player of the Year. I want to be First-Team All-NBA. I want to be a Gold medalist. I want to be a Hall of Famer. I want to be a Champion. Everything that’s the highest or the greatest that you can do, I want to do that."
