Ex-City striker Rosler becomes Wigan manager
LONDON, Dec 07, 2013 (AFP) - FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic have appointed former Manchester City striker Uwe Rosler as their new manager, the English Championship club announced on Saturday.
Rosler, 45, spent four years with City during the 1990s and joins from English third-tier club Brentford, where he had been working as manager since 2011.
He succeeds Owen Coyle, who resigned last weekend after a run of three successive defeats left the club from the English northwest in 14th place in the second-tier Championship.
"Uwe is one of the brightest young managers in the Football League and his ambition is to manage in the Premier League," said Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.
Wigan stunned City 1-0 in last season's FA Cup final, only to then be relegated from the Premier League under manager Roberto Martinez, who subsequently left the club to join Everton.
Their FA Cup success earned them a place in the Europa League and they visit Slovenian side Maribor on Thursday needing to win to stand any chance of reaching the last 32.
