The New York Mets and free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez have mutual interest, sources told Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Mets owner Steve Cohen has reportedly given his front office the green light to pursue Martinez even though the team already sits above the highest threshold of the competitive balance tax.

The six-time All-Star is also into the idea of joining the Los Angeles Angels, according to Heyman.

Both teams could use Martinez's services. The Mets currently have Ji Man Choi as their projected DH come Opening Day, while the Angels have yet to replace Shohei Ohtani's bat in the lineup.

The 36-year-old Martinez has reportedly spoken to the Miami Marlins about a contract after rejecting a one-year, $14-million deal from the San Francisco Giants in February.

The 13-year veteran slashed .271/.321/.572 with 33 homers and 103 RBIs over 113 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
