Memphis Tigers forward Emoni Bates is transferring schools after one season, he told Joe Tipton of On3.

"I'd like to thank coach Penny, my teammates, and the entire coaching staff at the University of Memphis for giving me the opportunity to be a Tiger," Bates said. "Thank you Tiger Nation for embracing me and all of you who supported our team throughout this season. With that being said, I have decided to enter the transfer portal."

Bates averaged 9.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in his freshman season with the Tigers. The third-ranked prospect in the Class of 2021 dealt with a back injury that kept him sidelined for more than six weeks from late January to mid-March.

It's unclear where Bates is heading next. The 18-year-old could transfer to another college program or opt to go professional by joining the NBA G League Ignite.

Bates isn't eligible for the 2022 NBA Draft because he won't be 19 years old when the selections are made in June. He should remain among the top prospects heading into the 2023 draft.
