Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal will miss the rest of the regular season upon undergoing surgery on his left wrist, the team announced on Tuesday.

“I’m disappointed to have my season end this way, but we all agreed that this was the best decision," Beal said in a statement. "I look forward to coming back at 100% and continuing to lead this team as we work together to build toward the future.”

Beal suffered the injury Jan. 29 against the Memphis Grizzlies.

After averaging more than 30 points per game in each of the past two seasons, the 10th-year veteran has had a difficult campaign. His scoring dropped to 23.2 points per game and his 49.2% effective field-goal rate is his lowest mark since 2014-15. On the other hand, Beal's 6.6 assists per game represent a career high.

The Wizards began the year 10-3. However, the team has gone 14-26 since that hot start and currently sit one game behind the 10th-seeded Atlanta Hawks for the East's final play-in berth.

This summer will be pivotal for Beal, a three-time All-Star, and the Wizards. Should the 28-year-old decline his $36.4-million player option for the 2022-23 season, he will be eligible to re-sign with the Wizards on a five-year, $245.6-million megadeal, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
