Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid could miss several games after entering the NBA's health and safety protocols, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Embiid was initially ruled out of Monday's game against the New York Knicks so he could rest in the first game of a back-to-back.

The four-time All-Star and reigning MVP finalist is now one of four members of the Eastern Conference-leading Sixers currently in protocols, joining Tobias Harris, Matisse Thybulle, and Isaiah Joe.

Members of Philadelphia's staff have been administered the COVID-19 booster, and Embiid and his teammates were set to start receiving their shots this week, according to Charania.

Embiid has featured in nine of the team's 10 games this season and is averaging 21.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, and four assists for the 8-2 Sixers.
