The Miami Marlins have traded outfielder Starling Marte to the Oakland Athletics for left-hander Jesus Luzardo and cash considerations, the team announced Wednesday.

Miami will cover all of Marte's remaining salary, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Marte, a pending free agent, is owed more than $4 million for the rest of this season.

The deal provides the A's with a gifted player in Marte, who should slot into their starting outfield alongside Ramon Laureano and Mark Canha.

Marte hit .306/.407/.453 with 25 RBIs in 63 games for the Marlins. His 22 steals rank third in baseball, while his 3.3 WAR is the seventh-best mark in the majors among outfielders with at least 250 plate appearances, according to FanGraphs.

Defensively, the two-time Gold Glove winner has been solid, amassing three defensive runs saved and five outs above average this campaign.

Marte is the second player added by the A's in recent days. Oakland acquired left-hander Andrew Chafin from the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

"We're very happy with the two additions we've made. We will continue to have conversations over the next 48 hours," general manager David Forst said on Wednesday, according to The San Francisco Chronicle's Matt Kawahara.

Luzardo, a native of Peru, went to high school in Florida.

The former top prospect struggled to a 6.87 ERA and 6.07 FIP with Oakland this season before he was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 21.

In 2020, the 23-year-old finished eighth in American League Rookie of the Year voting after striking out one hitter per inning during 59 frames of work.

Luzardo isn't expected to hit free agency until after the 2026 season.
