Strahan disputes authenticity of Super Bowl XLII jersey up for auction
Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan and Goldin Auctions are disputing the authenticity of a Super Bowl XLII jersey.
The auction house is selling what it claims to be a game-worn Strahan jersey from the New York Giants' 17-14 victory over the New England Patriots. However, Strahan said Wednesday that his Super Bowl XLII jersey is hanging in his home gym.
"That was the last game I ever played, and I kind of knew if we were gonna win, I was gonna retire anyway and it's the Super Bowl," Strahan told the "Pardon My Take" podcast. "So I just knew after that game, I was gonna keep everything. I kept everything except for the shoulder pads."
Strahan went on to explain he put everything into a duffel bag and gave it to a friend.
"Then when I got back to New Jersey, I take it out the bag, the whole thing is wet - still soaking wet and nasty - and I had to let it air out," he said. "I didn't wash it, I didn't want to have it washed because if you wash it, you pretty much wash away the game and in my opinion, it looks like every other jersey you've ever worn. The thing still has stains on it from dirt, from Gatorade, and the stench if you were to take it out of the frame."
Strahan said the Giants always had backup jerseys but maintains the one in his possession is the one he wore the entire game.
Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin stands by his company's listing, telling TMZ Sports that the jersey was obtained from a person who received it from a Giants equipment manager and has been authenticated by two photo-match experts.
"We are 100% confident the Strahan jersey in the auction is authentic," Goldin said. "And the photo matching services letters and images speak for themselves."
Bidding on the jersey is currently sitting at $45,000.
