Cormier-Miocic trilogy fight booked for Aug. 15
Arguably the biggest heavyweight title fight in UFC history is officially set.
Dana White announced Tuesday that current champion Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier will battle for the belt for the third time on Aug. 15, according to ESPN's Brett Okamoto.
The event is expected to take place in the United States, according to MMA Fighting's Damon Martin, though a location and venue have yet to be determined.
Cormier and Miocic are widely regarded as two of the premier heavyweights in mixed martial arts history, and the bout will be among the most highly anticipated of the year. The two first met at UFC 226 in July 2018, with "DC" capturing the title via first-round KO.
However, Miocic avenged his loss a year later at UFC 241, winning back the heavyweight crown with a fourth-round TKO.
Miocic has been out of action since the second fight between the two due to an eye injury. The trilogy bout against Cormier has reportedly been in the works for some time with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the promotion's schedule.
As a result of the champion's gym closing and his unwillingness to defend the belt, White previously discussed possibly booking an interim title fight, or even stripping Miocic of his title.
The UFC president also announced a stacked UFC 251 card that will take place July 11 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
