The Los Angeles Lakers are planning to reopen their practice facility Saturday for voluntary, socially distanced workouts in accordance with NBA protocols after working with city, county, and state officials, sources told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

However, the team's facility in El Segundo, California, won't be open to players and personnel for all seven days of the week, according to Stadium's Shams Charania.

A "handful" of Lakers players are expected to be in attendance Saturday, sources told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

The Lakers' Staples Center co-tenant, the Los Angeles Clippers, won't follow suit and it remains to be seen when they will reopen their practice facility, according to ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk.

Some teams have opened their practice facilities to limited participants over the last week, but many players are currently residing at their offseason homes, including Lakers center Dwight Howard.

Howard, who's based in Georgia, has been staying in shape during the hiatus and plans to fly back to L.A. commercially once it's safer to do so, according to USA TODAY's Mark Medina.

Previously, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he can't envision sports returning to the state with fans in attendance over the coming months unless a coronavirus vaccine is developed.

Two unidentified Lakers players had tested positive for COVID-19 but have since been declared symptom-free.
