Griffin out indefinitely after left knee surgery
Detroit Pistons star Blake Griffin is out indefinitely after undergoing left knee surgery, the team announced Tuesday.
On Monday, it was reported that Griffin was considering season-ending knee surgery. Following Tuesday's procedure, the team did not rule out the All-Star forward for the rest of this season but said he will "undergo an extended rehabilitation period."
Griffin has been battling the same knee injury since the latter stages of the 2018-19 campaign.
The former No. 1 overall pick has been limited to just 18 games this season while averaging career lows in points (15.5) and rebounds (4.7) per game.
Detroit can now apply for a $9.2-million disabled player exception for Griffin, which could be used to sign, claim, or trade for a player on a one-year deal for the remainder of this season, according to Yahoo Sports' Keith Smith.
Pistons power forward Christian Wood started Sunday's contest against the Los Angeles Lakers and has provided a boost in the absence of Griffin and fellow big man Markieff Morris.
Wood is averaging 11.7 points and 6.3 boards in 24.5 minutes per contest over his last six appearances.
