The Minnesota Twins have offered free-agent third baseman Josh Donaldson a four-year deal, sources told Dan Hayes of The Athletic.

The financial terms of the offer remain unknown.

The report comes out on the same day the Twins inked both Homer Bailey and Rich Hill to one-year contracts in order to bolster their starting rotation.

Landing both Bailey and Hill was part of a contingency plan for the reigning AL Central champions, who, earlier this winter, sought impact starters for their rotation, according to Hayes. However, after the top free-agent starters landed elsewhere, and Jake Odorizzi accepted his one-year, $17.8-million qualifying offer, the Twins pivoted and are looking to invest more heavily in their lineup.

It was first reported that Donaldson was believed to have fielded multiple four-year offers earlier in December, with the Twins and Washington Nationals named as the clubs willing to go to that term. The Los Angeles Dodgers and incumbent Atlanta Braves were also still reportedly in the mix.

After being held to 165 games over the past two years, the 34-year-old Donaldson had a bounce-back campaign in 2019. The former MVP and three-time All-Star appeared in 155 contests for the Braves, hitting .259/.379/.521 with 37 homers and four stolen bases.

The Twins are coming off of their first 100-win season since 1965 and first division title since 2010. While Odorizzi and Michael Pineda will return to the rotation, Kyle Gibson and Martin Perez have signed with the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox, respectively.
