Brewers, Smoak agree to 1-year deal worth reported $5M

The Milwaukee Brewers and first baseman Justin Smoak agreed to a one-year contract, the club announced Friday.

The deal, which was first reported on Thursday, will pay Smoak $4 million in 2020 and includes a $5.5-million team option for 2021 with a $1-million buyout, guaranteeing the former All-Star $5 million, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Smoak is the latest addition during a busy offseason for the Brewers. Over the past few days, the club has added Avisail Garcia, Eric Sogard, and Ryon Healy, and pitchers Brett Anderson and Josh Lindblom.

Smoak, 33, spent the last five seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .208/.342/.406 in 2019 with 22 homers over 121 games.

With Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain, and Garcia likely comprising the Brewers' outfield, Ryan Braun was a probable candidate to get full-time reps at first. However, adding Smoak could complicate that structure.
