Report: G League players discussing unionizing with NBPA

National Basketball Players Association leadership will meet with G League players this week in Las Vegas to continue discussions about unionizing the NBA's minor league, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Conversations between the NBPA and select G League players began at the 2018 G League Showcase and will continue on a larger scale this week at the 2019 event, Wojnarowski adds. The players' association reportedly sent a letter to player agents about the topic on Monday morning.

A formal vote on forming a union for G League players would take place after the 2019 Showcase, which runs from December 19-22, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

"We support the players' right to unionize," G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim said, per Charania. "We view this as a positive thing and are looking to continue to grow our league for the players to develop and accomplish their dreams."

Those in favor hope that unionizing will lead to increased salaries and negotiating power when structuring contracts, among other benefits, sources told Charania.
