Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was carted from Saturday's game against Mississippi State after suffering a hip injury on a big hit three minutes before halftime.

Tagovailoa was taken by helicopter to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Birmingham, according to Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News.

Before leaving the stadium, the Heisman contender appeared unable to walk without assistance and was also bleeding from his nose. Tagovailoa was "screaming in pain," according to ESPN sideline reporter Molly McGrath.

The Crimson Tide were up 35-7 at the time of the injury. Tagovailoa had thrown for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

Last week, Tagovailoa returned from an ankle injury to throw four touchdowns and an interception in a 46-41 loss to LSU. However, Alabama head coach Nick Saban said he'd be a game-time decision against Mississippi State after dealing with soreness leading up to the game, according to Matt Zentiz of AL.com.

After the injury, Saban said he'd been planning to pull Tagovailoa but then decided to keep him in for the two-minute drill to close out the second quarter.

Entering Week 12, Tagovailoa - who's widely expected to be a top-five pick in the 2020 NFL Draft - had thrown for 2,584 yards, 31 touchdowns, and three interceptions this season.

Backup Mac Jones finished the 38-7 win against the Bulldogs. Jones started Alabama's win over Arkansas and threw for 235 yards with three touchdowns.
