Report: Rockies' Gray is popular trade target

One of the Colorado Rockies' most effective pitchers is a popular trade target at the general manager meetings in Arizona.

Right-hander Jon Gray is among a select group of controllable starters who may be traded this offseason, reports MLB Network's Jon Morosi.

The San Diego Padres are one of the teams that have shown an interest in the 28-year-old, Morosi adds.

Gray is an attractive target, as he isn't eligible for free agency until 2022. He earned just $2.935 million in salary this past season and is projected to earn $5.6 million through arbitration next year, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

The hurler had a bounce-back campaign for the Rockies in 2019, posting a 3.84 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with his normally high strikeout numbers (9.0 K/9) across 150 innings.

Gray was actually better in the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field (6-2, 3.46 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) than he was on the road (5-6, 4.22 ERA, 1.42 WHIP), which aligns with his career numbers.

The former third overall pick owns a 43-33 record with a 4.46 ERA, 3.77 FIP, and 1.34 WHIP in 115 career appearances with the Rockies.
