John Sherman plans to keep the Kansas City Royals' front office - or at least the general manager's position - intact after he officially purchases the team this offseason, sources told Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

"John Sherman, from what I understand, knows (Royals GM) Dayton Moore well ... and my understanding is that Dayton Moore, once this (sale) is approved, will receive a long extension and be there for a long time," Heyman said during Tuesday's episode of the "Big Time Baseball" podcast.

Moore, 52, has been the Royals' general manager since the middle of the 2006 season, making him one of the longer-tenured executives in the majors. Following a successful run of drafts which saw the team recruit Alex Gordon, Mike Moustakas, and Eric Hosmer from 2005-08, he oversaw the club's back-to-back World Series appearances in 2014 and 2015. Kansas City lost in 2014 before claiming its first championship since 1985 the following year.

But the Royals have not sustained that success. Both Moustakas and Hosmer have since departed via free agency, while the team played at or below .500 to finish no better than third in the AL Central from 2016-18. Kansas City currently sits fourth in the division at 51-90, 36 games back of the first-place Minnesota Twins.

Moore previously worked with the Atlanta Braves, who originally hired him as a scout in 1994.
