Tiger Woods withdrew from The Northern Trust prior to his second round on Friday due to a strained oblique, he announced in a statement through the PGA Tour.

"Due to a mild oblique strain that led to pain and stiffness, I have to withdraw from The Northern Trust," Woods said. "I went for treatment early Friday morning, but unfortunately I'm unable to compete."

The 43-year-old carded a 4-over 75 at Liberty National on Thursday to sit 13 shots off the lead after Round 1. Afterward, he said his swing was a "little bit stiff."

"I'd like to thank the New Jersey and New York fans for their support and remain hopeful I can compete next week at the BMW Championship," Woods added.

The Northern Trust was Tiger's first tournament since he missed the cut at the Open Championship in July. Woods took time off between the events to get ready for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

His last withdraw was at the Dubai Desert Classic in February 2017.

The postseason will continue next week with the BMW Championship at Medinah Country Club in Chicago, beginning Aug. 15.
