Yankees' Voit sidelined with sports hernia, could need surgery
The New York Yankees placed first baseman Luke Voit on the 10-day injured list with a sports hernia prior to Wednesday's game.
Voit left Tuesday's contest against Arizona early with what was initially described as a core muscle injury. He then underwent an MRI.
His timetable is currently unknown. Manager Aaron Boone said no decision has been made on whether to opt for surgery - which would require a six-week recovery - or to avoid it and consider Voit day-to-day, according to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. The Yankees are expected to make a decision in the next 24-to-48 hours.
Voit missed several weeks earlier this month due to an abdominal strain he suffered during the Yankees' trip to England. Boone believes the hernia is a separate issue that started before the abdomen injury and only began to show itself in the last few days, according to Adler.
The 28-year-old owns a .278/.392/.493 slash line with 19 homers, 54 RBIs, and 58 walks over 94 games this season. Since returning from his previous IL stint, Voit's recorded just four extra-base hits.
The Yankees also placed reliever David Hale on the IL on Wednesday with a lumbar spine strain.
"Hopefully (it's) not a long thing," Boone said of Hale's injury, according to Adler.
Pitcher Jonathan Holder and infielder Breyvic Valera were recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in corresponding moves.
