Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera was arrested Monday night after a domestic violence incident at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, according to a statement released on Facebook by the Atlantic City Police Department.

Herrera was charged with simple assault but was later released from jail.

The police statement said that Herrera's 20-year-old girlfriend "had visible signs of injury to her arms and neck that was sustained after being assaulted by her boyfriend, David Odubel Herrera, during a dispute."

Herrera's first court date is scheduled for June 17, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb.

Major League Baseball placed Herrera on administrative leave, the Phillies announced Tuesday.

"This morning we were made aware of an alleged incident involving Odubel Herrera," the team statement read. "Upon receiving this information, we immediately reported the incident to Major League Baseball, which has informed us that Herrera has been placed on administrative leave. The Phillies take any domestic violence accusation seriously, and strongly support the Joint Domestic Violence policy agreed upon by MLB and the MLBPA."

Herrera may be kept on administrative leave for seven days.

Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said Herrera apologized in a brief phone conversation and added that the organization worked with the league to remove him from All-Star Game ballots, according to Gelb.

The 27-year-old is in the third season of a five-year, $30.5-million contract he signed with the Phillies in 2016. His deal also includes club options for 2022 and 2023.
