Report: Tottenham table £53M bid for Real Betis' Lo Celso
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may need to dust off his checkbook.
Following two transfer windows on the spin sans signings, Spurs are reportedly set to break the bank with a £53-million bid for Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, according to BBC Sport's Matt Davis.
Whether the Seville side accepts the offer is another matter. Betis reportedly slapped an £88-million release clause on Lo Celso, whom they secured to a permanent deal from Paris Saint-Germain following an initial year-long loan.
Spurs, who contest the Champions League final against Liverpool in Madrid on Saturday, last made a signing in January 2018, luring Brazilian winger Lucas Moura from PSG on a £23-million transfer. The north London lot's club-record fee was the £42 million tabled for Ajax center-half Davinson Sanchez in August 2017.
Lo Celso, 23, led Betis in goals this season, potting nine in La Liga to go with four assists. A central midfielder by trade who profits from strong dribbling skills, Lo Celso was also proficient this season in a more attacking role and as a makeshift forward, starting six matches there during the 2018-19 campaign for Los Verdiblancos.
