New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen revealed Monday that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has suffered multiple fractures in his right ankle after an accident on his ranch, according to Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News.

Van Wagenen said Cespedes is in a New York hospital getting his ankle examined after a "violent fall" caused by stepping in a hole, according to Tim Healey of Newsday.

The Mets GM added that the two-time All-Star wasn't riding a horse and that it happened during a non-baseball related activity, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The team doesn't have a timetable for Cespedes' recovery.

Before this injury, the 33-year-old was optimistic that he could play in 2019 after undergoing two separate surgeries between August and October of 2018 to remove bone calcification in his heels. As a result, Cespedes hasn't played a game in the majors since July 20 of last year, and only appeared in 119 contests in the past two seasons.

He is owed $29 million this season and $29.5 million in 2020.

Cespedes' last full healthy campaign came in 2016 when he slashed .280/.354/.530 with 31 home runs and 86 RBIs in 132 games for New York.
