Kristaps Porzingis plans to inform the Dallas Mavericks that he intends to sign a qualifying offer in restricted free agency this summer, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Signing the one-year qualifying offer will make him an unrestricted free agent in 2020. He could still also choose to sign a five-year designated player max extension with Dallas.

Porzingis' qualifying offer next season is worth $4.5 million. It would be a risk to leave max money on the table to sign a one-year deal for that lesser sum, especially coming off a serious leg injury. Few players of Porzingis' caliber have done that in the past.

One recent example is Greg Monroe, who signed a qualifying offer with the Detroit Pistons in 2014, then bolted to the Milwaukee Bucks in free agency the following year.

The Mavs reportedly acquired Porzingis in a stunning blockbuster trade on Thursday afternoon. He was sent from the New York Knicks along with Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, and Trey Burke in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews, and a draft pick.
