Washington Wizards guard John Wall will undergo season-ending surgery on his left heel, the team announced Friday.

Wall is expected to return to full basketball activity in approximately six-to-eight months.

The surgery was prescribed by doctors and is expected to help heal bone spurs that have plagued Wall for years, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

This will be the second straight season in which the Wizards lose Wall for an extended period. He missed a combined 41 contests last year due to injury. The 28-year-old's new four-year, $169.3-million extension will kick in starting next season.

Washington will likely turn to Tomas Satoransky to start at point guard after dealing Austin Rivers to the Phoenix Suns - Rivers was subsequently waived and signed by the Houston Rockets.

The Wizards have lost nine of their last 11 games and are currently 4 1/2 games behind the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.

Washington has been annihilated by the injury bug. Starting forward Otto Porter Jr. has missed the last nine games with a knee injury and Dwight Howard has sat all but nine contests as he recovers from lower back surgery.
